BUPA - NHS cuts will benefit private healthcare sector

Published on 12/08/2010
Government cuts to the NHS will have a positive effect on the private healthcare sector, the chief executive of BUPA has said.

Ray King commented: "The NHS has got to decide what it will do to meet the ever-increasing demand for care and the higher costs.

"It may make productivity gains, but our experience is that people want more choice and control over their healthcare, so that's a supportive trend for private healthcare."

His comments come as the healthcare group reported its half-yearly figures.

Despite a 0.8 per cent fall in membership, the firm achieved a ten per cent rise in revenue to reach £3.71 billion for the period.

Profit rose by five per cent to £183.6 million.

Mr King predicted that BUPA would achieve higher profits in the future. He said: "The UK and US governments started to articulate their plans for reform of their healthcare systems and we believe that this should offer new opportunities for our businesses in the future."

The government will announce a spending review in the autumn, outlining further cuts to departments and organisations.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
