Brits risking their health with online prescription meds

Published on 05/11/2009
More than one in seven adults in the UK has admitted to bypassing the healthcare system to get prescription drugs.

According to the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), this growing practice of purchasing prescription medicines online is putting people's health at risk.

Crispin Slee, spokesperson for the ABPI, said: "People are taking their lives in their own hands when they buy prescription drugs over the internet.

"We need properly qualified people to prescribe us the right kind of medicines...It might be interesting to quantify how much treating people who have suffered through taking these self-prescribed drugs is costing the NHS."

Research reveals that around 60 per cent of adults agree that they're more trusting of all purchases they make online today compared to five years ago.

Earlier this year, the NHS reported that one quarter of GPs have treated patients for problems caused by medicines bought over the internet.

Problem drugs include medicines for erectile dysfunction, weight loss, tanning, hair loss and depression.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
