Breast cancer risk dramatically reduced by eating flaxseeds

Published on 14/09/2011

Women with private health insurance who are worried about breast cancer are advised to eat flaxseeds, which can help cut the risk by 40 per cent.

Compounds called phytoestrogens, the most important of which are lignans, kill off cancer cells and prevent secondary tumours by stopping the growth of new blood vessels.

Whilst seeds, wheat and vegetables all contain these plant compounds, flaxseeds were found to be especially high in lignans.

The compounds attach to oestrogen in the body and become enterolactone in the bowel.

German scientists analysed blood samples of over 1,000 women diagnosed with premenopausal breast cancer over a three year period. The women with the higher levels of enterolactone in their blood had their mortality rate dramatically reduced.

The results, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, also showed that high levels of enterolactone also protected against the spread of cancer and secondary tumours.

Asian women with a soy-rich diet are less frequently affected by breast cancer, since a soy-rich diet also contains large amounts of phytoestrogens.

Study author Professor Jenny Chang-Claude, from the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg said: 'We now have first clear evidence showing that lignans lower not only the risk of developing postmenopausal breast cancer, but also the mortality risk.

'By eating a diet that is rich in whole meal products, seeds and vegetables, which is considered to be health-promoting anyway, everybody can take in enough lignans,' she said.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
