Breast cancer drug Faslodex rejected for use on the NHS

Published on 10/11/2011

Breast cancer drug Faslodex (Fulvestrant) has been refused for use on the NHS by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). However, patients with private health insurance could still have access to it on their policy.

Faslodex, made by AstraZeneca, is licensed to treat certain forms of breast cancer in older women who have already received some treatment. Data shows women on Faslodex live for an average of 36 months, compared to 32 months for those on anastrozole and 31 months for those on letrozole.

However, Faslodex costs £500 a month, which is up to 84 times more than the alternatives already available. NICE has ruled that there is not enough evidence that it works any better than the cheaper drugs which are already available on the NHS.

Sir Andrew Dillon, Chief Executive of Nice, said: “As fulvestrant has not been proven to be cost-effective, we cannot justify diverting NHS funds from other areas of healthcare in order to fund its use."

If no appeals are received by Thursday 24 November, Nice hopes to publish final guidance for the NHS in January.

Maria Leadbeater, Clinical Nurse Specialist at Breast Cancer Care said the decision was 'disappointing'.

Whilst Faslodex will not be available for patients on the NHS, people who already have private medical insurance may be covered for the costs. Aviva, Bupa and PruHealth all offer access to cancer drugs as long as they have been proven effective.

If you want to ensure treatment with Faslodex in the future, make sure you choose a comprehensive health insurance policy with no limits on cancer cover. Compare health insurance quotes online now to gain peace of mind about your future health.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
