BMA warns that NHS proposals are 'potentially damaging'

Published on 01/10/2010
More people may be spurred to seek private medical cover after the British Medical Association (BMA) warned that planned changes to the NHS could be "potentially damaging".

The organisation, which represents the country's medical professionals, claims that plans outlined in a recently published government White Paper, entitled Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS, risk placing too much emphasis on cost reduction at the expense of quality.

Included in the proposals is the introduction of GP consortia which would be given control over much of the health budget.

They would also have greater scope to commission care from private providers rather than NHS hospitals.

Dr Hamish Meldrum, chairman of council at the BMA, said: "The BMA has consistently argued that clinicians should have more autonomy to shape services for their patients, but pitting them against each other in a market-based system creates waste, bureaucracy and inefficiency."

He added that doctors need to work in partnership with each other in a "co-operative environment" if they are to improve services.

Public service trade union UNISON has launched a legal battle over the White Paper, claiming there was no adequate consultation held on its proposals.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
