BMA: Mental illness education needed

Published on 11/08/2009
The public needs to be educated more about mental health issues.

That is the opinion of the British Medical Association (BMA), which has suggested that more needs to be done to tackle stigma of such illnesses.

The news comes as it was found that many doctors in particular are concerned about seeking medical help for mental health problems.

A spokesperson said: "Doctors suffering from mental illness are reluctant to attend NHS clinics as they can be worried about confidentiality and news getting back to their peers and employers.

"What we need is culture change to battle the stigma."

He added that there also needed to be "more support" for doctors who suffer from mental health problems.

According to the Mental Health Foundation, one in six people in England suffer from a common mental health problem at any one time.

Of that figure, one in ten is seeking a talking-based treatment.

It is believed that around a third of GP's time is spent dealing with mental health issues and that mental-ill health costs the UK economy £100 billion a year.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
