Blood pressure drugs ARB inhibitors dramatically reduce the risk of Alzheimer's

Published on 19/10/2011

Scientists have discovered that taking new blood pressure drugs will cut the risk of Alzheimer’s by up to 50 per cent, according to findings published online in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

A study of almost 60,000 people in Britain over the age of 60 revealed that patients taking ARB inhibitors to lower blood pressure were 50 per cent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s, whilst patients taking ACE inhibitors had a 24 per cent lower risk.

ARBs and ACEs are commonly prescribed to people under the age of 55 to treat hypertension. The researchers at Bristol University found that older blood pressure drugs like beta blockers, calcium channel blockers and diuretics had less of an effect on the risk of dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease is caused by parts of the brain wasting away. As parts of the cerebral cortex wastes away, ‘plaques’ start to form in the brain, which destroy more brain cells, making the condition worse.

The next step is clinical trials to see if the drugs stop mild cognitive impairment from progressing into full-blown dementia, or delay progression.

The findings, published online in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, could help develop treatment that will delay, slow or even prevent dementia.

Study co-author Dr Patrick Kehoe, a pharmacologist at the Alzheimer’s Research UK network in Bristol, said:"If these results are borne out in clinical trials, then we'll have a swathe of drugs that could be used against Alzheimer's.

Patients with private medical insurance often have access to new treatments not available for use on the NHS. People worried about developing dementia should compare health insurance policies online now, to benefit from expensive drugs in the future.
