Ban on light drinking does not have to be part of pregnancy healthcare plan, say researchers.

Published on 07/10/2010
Expecting mothers do not have to cut out all alcohol as part of their pregnancy healthcare plan, researchers have suggested.

A new study has found there is no evidence that drinking small amounts of alcohol will lead to behavioural or intellectual development problems in the child.

Scientists lead by a team from University College London studied a sample of 11,513 children born between September 2000 and January 2002 using data from the Millennium Cohort Study - a large study tracking the long term health of children born in the UK.

The mothers were quizzed about their alcohol consumption while the children's behavioural and intellectual development were assessed at age five.

It was found that, after adjusting for other socio-economic factors, the children of mothers who drank heavily (defined as seven or more units of alcohol a week or six at one sitting) were more likely to be hyperactive and have behavioural and emotional problems.

However, children born to light drinkers (one or two units a week or at any one time)
were 30 per cent less likely to have behavioural problems than children whose mothers did not drink during pregnancy and achieved higher cognitive scores on average.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence advises pregnant women to avoid alcohol in the first three months in particular, because of the increased risk of miscarriage.
