Avoid long waits for NHS physiotherapy treatment with private health insurance

Published on 12/10/2011

Recent news has revealed that some patients are waiting up to six months for NHS physiotherapy treatment. We compare the hospitals with the longest waits with nearby private hospitals, to see the difference private medical insurance (PMI) can make to your quality of care.

A survey by the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) and Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) has revealed that the NHS is restricting access to physiotherapy treatments in order to cut costs. As well as waiting longer for treatment, patients are also receiving fewer sessions.

According to the survey, which looked at 115 NHS primary care trusts across England, the average rate across the country is 11.8 weeks, but there are significant variations in standards. The longest wait for treatment is in West Sussex, where waiting times can be anything between four and 27 weeks.

With private medical insurance, patients in the West Sussex could instead receive physiotherapy at the BMI Goring Hall Hospital in Goring-by-Sea. This private hospital has a special physiotherapy department with four private treatment rooms and a gym, and guarantees fast referrals and access to the latest technology.

The budgets for many NHS physiotherapy providers have also been cut in the last year, with the biggest in the Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (9%).

Patients with private medical insurance could instead be treated at the West Midlands Hospital, a private hospital in Birmingham run by Ramsey Health. This hospital guarantees no waiting list, one to one patient care, treatment of emergency problems within 24 hours of referral, and extended appointment hours.

More than 4 million patients receive physiotherapy on the NHS every year, but treatment waiting lists look only to increase. In a survey of over 200 senior physiotherapy managers, 66% said they did not expect to have enough resources to satisfy rising demand for their departments' services in the coming year.

Patients with a full comprehensive health insurance policy will bypass lengthy NHS queues for physiotherapy treatment. Use our free searchable hospital database to find out which policy will cover your chosen private hospital. Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
