Antibiotics used to stop superbugs in NHS hospitals actually increase risk of infection

Published on 01/11/2011

New antibiotics used to tackle superbugs actually increase the risk of infection, according to new research published in the British Journal of Urology International.

A team of scientists at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge studied 709 patients undergoing a prostate cancer diagnosis operation. Out of the 454 patients who were treated with the standard drug, ciprofloxacin, only 2.4 per cent developed an infection.

In contrast, 12.9 per cent of the patients who were given new antibiotics developed an infection in the same period, and 4.7 per cent were admitted for further complications-seven of which suffered sepsis, and one septic shock.

The new antibiotics, such as coamoxiclav and gentamicin, are recommended under national guidelines to combat infections like C. difficile. But none of the patients on the original therapy suffered serious complications, and re-introducing the original regime led to a fall in infective complications.

Team leader, Professor David Neal, said:

‘The new regime was introduced on the proviso that both the hospital-acquired infection rates and post-operative infection rates would be closely monitored.

‘Given that there were no cases of C. difficile recorded in our study, but post-operative infection rates increased significantly, the decision was taken to revert back to the original regime.’

With private medical insurance, patients can be treated in a private hospital of their choice, often with no recorded incidences of superbugs or hospital infections. Compare health insurance policies online now to gain peace of mind about your future healthcare.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
