Anti-ageing pill could be just two years away

Published on 24/09/2010
Those with private medical cover could have access to a pill that can significantly slow down the ageing process in just two years time.

Professor Vladimir Skulachev of Moscow State University has claimed he is working on a pill that halts the damaging effects of oxygen on the body's cells.

Oxygen is used by cells as part of the energy exchange process, but it can also harm cells if it takes on poisonous forms and this is one of the key factors in the ageing process.

A number of natural anti-oxidants have been discovered, but none strong enough to radically alter this process.

Professor Skulachev, explained: "Ninety-nine per cent of the time oxygen turns into harmless water, but there's that one per cent that turns into a super-oxide that later turns into very poisonous elements.

"The task was to find an anti-oxidant that stops that process."

If his claims are true, the pill could potentially add decades to peoples' lives.

According to data from the World Bank, life expectancy in the UK has been increasing steadily over recent decades, reaching 79.9 in 2008.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
