All pregnant women now eligible for a caesarean birth on the NHS

Published on 01/11/2011

Under new guidelines, all women will now have the right to a caesarean birth on the NHS, even if there is no medical need. This will also benefit pregnant women with private medical insurance, who are only covered for complications arising during pregnancy and birth.

Previously, pregnant women were only allowed caesareans in NHS hospitals if medically necessary. Now, the NHS will be told to make the operation available to women who are able to give birth naturally.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) will publish the new guidelines next month. Women will be encouraged to discuss their decision with doctors and midwives first before asking for the procedure.

Dr Bryan Beattie, a consultant obstetrician who helped to draw up the existing NICE guidelines, said: ‘It is a huge development.

‘Ten or 15 years ago there may have been a better argument for saying no, but caesarean sections have become much safer. We have closed the gap to the extent that you really do have to bring in maternal choice as part of the decision-making process.’

Since pregnancy is not considered an illness, health insurance does not cover hospital treatment for normal pregnancy and childbirth. Thus, these new guidelines will benefit women with private medical insurance who choose to have a caesarean for personal or cosmetic reasons.

Women who already have health insurance for a certain qualifying period could be covered for complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Compare health insurance policies online now to see if you could be covered in the future.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
