Alcohol linked to growing cancer rates

Published on 08/12/2009
There has been a 50 per cent rise in the number of cancer cases linked to drinking excessive amounts of alcohol since 1997, new figures reveal.

Research published by the Liberal Democrats found that alongside the massive increase in liver and oral cancers during that period, there has also been a twenty per cent growth in cancers of the oesophagus.

According to the study, men who drink five units of alcohol every day are 2.5 times more likely to develop mouth cancer than those who do not and women are 3.6 times more at risk of liver cancer.

In response to the report, Alcohol Concern's chief executive Don Shenker said that many people are unaware of the connection between alcohol and cancer.

He commented: "While alcoholic liver disease remains the number one killer linked to alcohol, more and more people are suffering from oral cancers – and record drinking levels have undeniably played a part."

Mr Shenker called for anti-smoking style health warnings on alcohol consumption in order to educate people of the full range of risks associated with drinking above recommended guidelines.

Cancer Research UK defines 'heavy drinking' as six units per day - the equivalent of three standard measure glasses of wine or two pints of lager.

No.1 health insurance broker as rated by customers

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
