8,000 patients have died from NHS blunders over the past 13 years

Published on 07/11/2011

New figures uncovered by the government show that NHS blunders by doctors, nurses and ambulance staff have killed 8,000 patients in 13 years.

The number of clinical negligence claims, handled by the National Health Service Litigation Authority, rose by about 300 per cent over the years that Labour was in power.

In 1997-8, 223 claims involving death were recorded. This had risen to 903 claims in 2009-10. Experts say the true number of patients who died unnecessarily is likely to be higher, since not all families launched legal action.

Joyce Robbins, of campaign group Patient Concern, said the deaths had come despite Labour initially ‘swamping’ the NHS with money.

‘I think targets had a lot to do with it, everything was rushed in order to meet the targets,’ she said.

These figures come after news that emergency care assistants are replacing paramedics for 999 emergency calls, as NHS cuts hit ambulance trusts.

Emergency care assistants (ECAs) only have first aid training, and are unable to administer life-saving drugs or give injections. The role was introduced four years ago to ease the burden on paramedics by driving ambulances and taking patients into hospitals.

But six out of 12 ambulance trusts in England send ECAs on 999 calls without paramedics, putting patient’s lives at risk.

Whilst private health insurance will not provide cover for emergency treatment, it will cover the costs of private healthcare after a patient has been stabilised.

Medical insurance will help you avoid blunders by NHS staff, and give you peace of mind about your future healthcare. Compare health insurance policies online now with ActiveQuote.
