36 NHS Trusts have higher than expected death rates according to the SHMI

Published on 28/10/2011

Newly released Department of Health statistics have shown that 36 NHS Trusts have higher than expected death rates. We summarise the report and suggest alternative hospitals for patients with private medical insurance.

The Department of Health has developed a new measure, called a Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator (SHMI) to provide an "early trigger to probe potential problems". It was created after the scandal at Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust in 2009 where between 400 and 1,200 excess deaths were not picked up.

The indicator is based on data collected between April 1 2010 and March 31 2011, and is a ratio of the observed number of deaths to the expected number of deaths for a provider.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said: "We are determined to learn the lessons of the appalling events at Mid Staffordshire - this data will help us avoid a repeat of that tragedy.”

George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust in Nuneaton came out worst in the report, with 1,024 deaths where 843 were expected. At East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, 2,550 people died where 2,154 had been expected.

With private health insurance, patients can choose where and when they want to be treated. Spire Harpenden Hospital is a private hospital situated in Harpenden in Hertfordshire. The hospital has 2 critical care beds, 18 day-care beds, 50 single private rooms, and 17 consulting rooms. The hospital also has 4 operating theatres.

30 miles away from George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust lies the Spire Hospital Leicester. The Spire Hospital Leicester is a private hospital, with 54 single private rooms, all ensuite with a television and a telephone. The hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic imaging scans and tests, as well as critical care beds.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
