30,000 eye injuries caused by DIY

Published on 31/08/2010
Those undertaking DIY should use protective eyewear or risk needing an healthcare plan to treat an injury.

An estimated 30,000 eye injuries occur every year in the UK as the result of DIY accidents, warns the College of Optometrists.

Despite this, 89 per cent of people admit to forgoing using protective eyewear when carrying out potentially hazardous DIY tasks.

Furthermore, nearly half of people (45 per cent) also admit to not knowing much about DIY but having a go anyway.

Dr Susan Blakeney, optometric adviser to the College of Optometrists, said: "You only have one pair of eyes so it's vital to protect them when undertaking certain DIY tasks.

"Generally the rule of thumb is that if there is a risk of any foreign bodies entering the eye, wearing protective eyewear is essential."

She added that gardening is also associated with a high number of eye injuries and recommended wearing glasses or sun glasses when working in the garden.

According to figures from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, more accidents happen at home than anyone else, with the living room the most likely area of the house for them to occur.
