2,000 nursing places cut in England, whilst NHS sources staff from abroad

Published on 12/09/2011

After our report that last year the private health insurance industry saved the NHS over £2 billion, it has been revealed that around 2,000 nursing places have been cut in England, whilst other nurses are sourced from abroad.

The Labour party used Freedom of Information requests to discover that there were 2,000 fewer places to study on nursing, midwifery and clinical health care university courses in England.

Shadow Health Secretary John Healey said: 'David Cameron promised to protect the NHS but these cuts to the funding of important university courses will mean fewer nurses and midwives in the years to come”.

The news follows an investigation by The Sunday Telegraph which found that at least 11 NHS trusts and one health authority sent teams abroad to recruit doctors and nurses.

In the first 12 months of the Coalition, the number of nurses from outside the European Union, where an immigration cap applies, went from 635 to 1,307. Concerns were raised last week by Lord Winston about the poor standards of English of NHS nurses from Eastern Europe.

Dr Peter Carter, the Royal College's general secretary said it was "absolutely crazy" that hospital trusts had gone abroad to recruit.

"It is incomprehensible and unacceptable to have these sorts of recruitment trawls abroad when so many staff are being laid off, and so many newly qualified nurses can't find work," he said.

With nursing salaries starting at around £21,000, just 5% more people taking out a health insurance policy could pay the wages of over 118,000 NHS nurses.
