15 minutes of exercise a day boosts life expectancy

Published on 18/08/2011
Doing just 15 minutes of exercise a day can boost life expectancy of private medical cover holders by three years, a new report reveals.

Scientists followed 400,000 men and women in Taiwan for an average of 8 years between 1996 and 2008 and published their findings in the Lancet Medical Journal. The study placed the people in 5 categories of activity, ranging from low to very high.*

Surprisingly, even the low volume group benefitted from their short workouts. The study revealed that a short burst of vigorous activity reduced the risk of dying by 14%, and the cancer risk by 10%. Each additional 15 minutes a day will reduce the risk of cancer by 1% and death by 4%.

This comes as good news to people who are not ready for the Government recommended 30 minutes of exercise a day. Indeed, the National Survey for England found that only 30% of people are actually achieving this amount.

Professor Ken Fox, an academic in exercise and health at Bristol University and former adviser to a Commons committee on obesity, said: ‘The Department of Health recommends 30 minutes a day but for those who are not ready for that, such as obese and older people, this can bridge the gap.’

Little research into the impact of short work outs has been carried out until now, and the results may help reduce medical costs and disparities in health. Getting your heart rate up is as easy as going for a brisk walk or doing housework.
