Total Disability

The person covered meets the definition of incapacitated that applies to them. They need to be incapacitated for a continuous period longer than 26 weeks.

Total Disability is paid as a monthly benefit where the condition may improve to the extent that the person covered no longer meets the definition of incapacitated that applies to them.

 

Total Disability payments can only continue until:

the person covered is no longer incapacitated;
the earlier of their cover end date or the Total Disability end date as shown in the Cover Summary; or
the total of these payments, plus any previous payments for Total Disability, is equal to 100% of what the sum assured was when the person covered became incapacitated.
Where the person covered meets the definition of incapacitated that applies to them and the condition is, or becomes, a Total Permanent Disability, or they meet one of our Group I critical illness conditions, the

remainder of the benefit will be payable to the owner of the cover as a lump sum. The cover stops after we have paid the remainder of the sum assured.

For the above definition, disabilities for which the relevant specialists cannot give a clear prognosis are not covered.

 

If the person covered was in paid work before they became incapacitated and meets our own occupation or suited occupation definition

We will pay a monthly benefit equal to the lower of:

  • 1% of the current sum assured; or
  • 50% of their pre-tax monthly income before they became incapacitated, less any income they are still receiving from their employer, from self employment, from other insurance benefits or from pension arrangements other than State Pensions.

 

If the person covered was in paid work before they became incapacitated, but meets our work tasks definition

The maximum we will pay each month is 1% of the current sum assured. Up to this limit, we will pay the higher of:

50% of their pre-tax monthly income before they became incapacitated less any income they are still receiving from their employer, from self-employment, from other insurance benefits or from pension

arrangements other than State Pensions; or

£1,667 a month.

 

If the person covered was not in paid work before they became incapacitated

We will pay 1% of the current sum assured, up to a maximum of £1,667 a month.

 

When to claim

We ask the person claiming to contact us as soon as possible.

For Waiver of Premium and Total Disability claims, we ask we are notified within eight weeks of the person covered becoming incapacitated.

Sum assured in instalments - The sum assured cannot be paid in instalments, unless the client is claiming for the Optional Total Disability when a monthly benefit is paid.

 

Large case discount available – There is a large case discount for sums assured in excess of £50,000.

What are the exclusions applicable to critical illness cover with AIG YourLife Plan Critical Illness with Term Assurance?

There are 2 critical illness exclusions. Alcohol or drug abuse and Self-inflicted injuries are excluded for a limited number of conditions.

Alcohol or drug abuse

This only applies to a limited number of conditions, as follows:

  • Cardiomyopathy related to alcohol or drug misuse
  • Coma secondary to alcohol or drug abuse
  • Liver disease secondary to alcohol or drug misuse
  • HIV infection resulting from sexual activity or drug abuse
  • Severe mental illness conditions related to or exacerbated by alcohol or drug abuse.
  • Self- Inflicted is excluded for a limited number of conditions, as follows:
  • Surgical removal of an eyeball caused by intentional self-inflicted injuries.
  • Accidental hospitalisation - an accident as a result of drug or alcohol intake or other self-inflicted means. 

 

Would I be excluded from AIG YourLife Plan Critical Illness with Term Assurance if:

 

I worked in armed force - This is not excluded.
Had pre-existing condition – Pre-existing conditions are not excluded from the main plan. However, pre-existing conditions are excluded for children's critical illness cover.

Are there any claims support services for AIG YourLife Plan Critical Illness with Term Assurance?

 

Support during a claim

If we have agreed that the person claiming may have a valid claim for Critical Illness with Term Assurance, we may pay up to £300 for services that support the person covered or their family. The services that are covered by this support payment will depend on the circumstances but could range from physiotherapy or counselling to the cost of taking taxis to hospital appointments.

We need to approve the services, and agree their cost, before they are used. Whether we approve the service depends on the situation of the person covered and the advice of their doctor. We will refund the cost as soon as we have received the receipts for the services that we agreed. The claims adviser will explain the services that we can pay for. Please remember that if we pay for support services, it does not necessarily mean we will approve a claim for benefit. We will not pay for support services in relation to a Waiver of Premium claim.
