Alun Doull, Finance Director

Background

Alun is a Chartered Accountant with extensive experience as a Finance Director in Manufacturing, the Service Sector and Financial Services. Having qualified with Arthur Young in London, Alun returned to his native Cardiff to join BDO Binder Hamlyn for exposure to SMEs and owner-managed businesses. He subsequently joined major UK printer and FTSE 250 member St Ives plc as FD at their £30m T/O South Wales plant. Alun was instrumental in securing funding for and managing the company’s move to a new flagship £40m plant, and consequently was appointed MD of the company.

Experience

In 2011, Alun left to form his own consultancy business providing SME FD support. Having previously undertaken projects on behalf of ActiveQuote, he joined the team in October 2013.

Notable Achievements

In 2000 Alun was approached to join Cardiff Rugby as CFO and, over the next 11 years, transformed the rebranded Cardiff Blues into one of Europe’s leading clubs.

Fun Facts

Alun’s nephew, Owain Doull, is a Gold Olympic Medallist. And Alun was once bought a beer by a former president of France.

 

Hugh Currell, Partnerships Manager

Background

Hugh was born in Hackney, East London, in the 1990s before studying at Liverpool from 2009 to 2012. He moved to Wales after university and is now settled in Penarth, with his daughter being born here in 2012.

Education

Hugh was educated at Rugby School in the Midlands before studying Journalism at Liverpool John Moores University and graduating in 2012 with a 2:1 Honours Degree.

Experience

Huw started his career ActiveQuote in April 2013, quickly becoming an integral part of the Business Development department. He became Partnerships Manager in 2016 and now manages the major accounts including GoCompare, Confused, uSwitch, Money.co.uk and Bought By Many. Before joining AQ, previous jobs included magazine editor, estate agent and barman!

Credentials

Three A-Levels in Maths, English Language and Business Studies and an Honours Degree in Journalism. Hugh is also an NCTJ-qualified journalist.

Notable Achievements

When Hugh joined ActiveQuote in 2013, the company had about 30 members of staff. He began as a junior marketing executive and worked his way up to the management team within three years, developing a partnership with InsurTech company Bought By Many in 2015 and delivering year-on-year increases in leads and commercial success for both ActiveQuote and Bought By Many. He was also a core member of the team that delivered renewed partnerships with uSwitch and GoCompare in 2017.

Ambitions

Professionally, Hugh aims to become a leading expert in his field, building lasting partnerships with some of the biggest brands in the insurance and comparison industry. He is proud of being part of the management team that aims to take ActiveQuote to becoming a household name for health, income protection and life insurance.

Personally, he want to complete some sections of the Tour de France if time - and his body! - permits, after cycling at the Newport Velodrome (which he describes as “one of the most fun things I’ve done”). If Hugh didn’t work in insurance, he would be a private chef, enjoying rustling up anything from sushi to beef wellington at home.

Fun Facts

During the 2015 Rugby World Cup, Hugh managed to catch the ball behind the posts during the Wales vs. Fiji game and perform a perfect torpedo pass back to the pitch in front of 75,000 people!

He’s a huge sports fan and has been to the Olympics in Athens in 2004 and London in 2012, the Football World Cup in 2006 (to see England predictably lose on penalties), the 2015 Ashes, the 2015 Rugby World Cup and the first ever day-night cricket test match between Australia and South Africa in Adelaide. He’s now planning trips to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the next Lions tour in 2021 - phew!

Hugh is also the Vice Treasurer on his daughter’s school’s PTA, with the highlight being acting as head chef at the end of year BBQ, catering for more than 100 people.

 

Jonathan Keenor, Head of Technology

Background

Jonathan is an entrepreneurial-spirited, pioneering technologist with 10+ years of experience in all stages of web and software development, from concept and development, through to validation and release.

Education

Jonathan graduated from Cardiff University in 2005 with an honours degree in computer science

Experience

An experienced, hands-on Senior Manager with excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Jonathan began working at Fortune 100 company Johnson & Johnson in its medical devices and diagnostics sector, as part of a dedicated team developing web-based automation of machinery to perform blood diagnostic tests. He then joined a start-up called GoCompare.com as one of its initial developers, progressing through various roles and high-level projects as the company went from 20 staff to more than 200 and became a household name!

Credentials

A Microsoft-certified professional with industry leading experience in multiple domains, including high volume comparison websites, insurance, healthcare and manufacturing, Jonathan is also a certified ScrumMaster, with experience of establishing, working within and leading agile development teams based on the Scrum framework, Kanban, as well as more traditional waterfall methods.

Fun Facts

There’s a road named after and a statue of Jonathan’s great grandfather, Welsh football legend Fred Keenor, who was captain of Cardiff City FC when they won the FA cup in 1927!

 

 

Rhys Davies, Compliance Manager

Background

Rhys originally trained in the hospitality industry and worked in various hotels in Cardiff, as well as one summer in Luxembourg, before temping for a company called Forthright Finance in 1997. Here he vetted motor finance applications for possible fraud and, barring a brief stint in the public sector working for the Welsh Assembly, he’s worked in the financial sector ever since. His career has included positions at Firstplus Finance and Picture Financial before joining ActiveQuote, where roles in the risk and compliance and underwriting areas have involved a large amount of analytical and investigative work.

Rhys is also a passionate autodidact and have been studying various strands of psychology and neuroscience in a personal capacity for a number of years, strongly believing that understanding what drives human behaviour is essential to personal development and success in all aspects of life.

Experience

Rhys has 20 years’ experience in the finance and insurance sector to his name. The majority of his time has been spent as an underwriter and as a compliance officer or manager, but he’s also enjoyed roles in fraud prevention, complaint and dispute resolution and quality assurance and analysis, among others.

ICA Advanced Certificate in Compliance – Level 4

Notable Achievements

Rhys was a talented teenage athlete and sportsman, representing his school at athletics and rugby. Highlights include finishing fourth in the South Glamorgan 100m final - he still insists he could have made the top three had he not already run 50m after a false start! -  and representing Cardiff Schools Rugby at all age levels, scoring a try at Cardiff Arms Park against Bristol! Since then, sadly, Rhys describes his achievements as ‘largely average’.

Ambitions

Rhys wants to see his daughters live happy, fulfilling lives and to be the best version of himself he can be, with no regrets. He also wants to start a philanthropic venture in later life!

Rhys’ cousin appeared in Australian soap opera Neighbours before becoming a Buddhist teacher!

 

 

Rob Merrills, Financial Controller

Background

Born and raised in Carmarthenshire, Rob moved to Bristol to develop his career after four years working for Carmarthen Council. Following two ‘fantastic’ years in Bristol, he moved back to the Motherland to settle in Cardiff.

Education

Rob went to Welsh-medium Ysgol Gyfun Maesyryrfa before attending Swansea Metropolitan University part-time to study ACCA.

Experience

Apart from an initial four years in the public sector, Rob has spent career in the private sector, first working at an accountancy practice with a range of clients, including a Dragon’s Den contestant! He then came to ActiveQuote, where he started four years ago as a company accountant before working his way up to the senior management position of Financial Controller. In this time, he’s seen the company grow from 30 employees to 130 (and rising!).

Credentials

Rob’s a fully qualified accountant and member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. He has three A-levels in Maths, Physics and English Literature.

Notable Achievements

Rob played an integral part in securing a £600k Welsh Assembly jobs creation grant, which has facilitated ActiveQuote’s rapid growth over the last four years, recognised by the FastGrowth50 Awards. He has also worked on the Wealthify project, building budgets and forecasts, which has now received a significant investment from Aviva.

Ambitions

Rob’s professional ambitions are to become a leader for a progressive, dynamic company that strives for improvements through technology and design.

Fun Facts

I have cycled from London to Paris (280 miles) in 24 hours and around Wales (410 miles) in three days.

 

 

Sarah Sancho, Head of Sales

Background

Sarah built her skills in sales and people development when self-employed for more than 10 years in the network marketing industry, building sales teams and developing leaders.

Experience

Experienced Head of Sales with a demonstrated history of working in the financial services industry. Skilled in Sales, Sales Operations, Customer Retention, Sales Management, People Development and Relationship Building.

Notable Achievements

In her younger days, Sarah swam competitively for Cardiff and the Welsh Youth Squad - hence her competitive nature!!

Fun Facts

Sarah enjoys travelling and experiencing different countries and cultures. Her best trip to date was for her 50th, when she camped on a tiny island off the coast of British Columbia and went kayaking with whales – humpbacks and orcas.
