The Channel Islands are situated in the English Channel off the Normandy coast of France, and are divided into the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey, which include the islands of Alderney, Sark and Herm. They are not part of the UK or the European Union, but their inhabitants are British citizens. The Channel Islands have a total population of around 160,000. Jersey and Guernsey have one private hospital apiece.
The Isle of Man is situated in the Irish Sea between the islands of Great Britain and Ireland and 221 square miles across. It is not part of the UK but its foreign relations and defence are the responsibility of the UK Government. At the 2006 interim census the Isle of Man was home to 80,058 people, of whom 26,218 resided in the island's capital, Douglas.
