A Wiltshire man has been forced to have two appendectomies after the first attempt failed to remove the appendix.
Mark Wattson was told initially that the operation went well, but had to return to the Great Western Hospital a month later after collapsing in Swindon.
The 35-year-old then discovered that his appendix had ruptured - a complication that can be fatal.
After admitting that he "couldn't believe" what he was hearing, Mr Wattson said: "I told these people I had my appendix out just four weeks earlier but there it was on the scanner for all to see."
The second operation then led to further complications and he claims to have lost his job as a result.
He is now considering taking legal action against Great Western Hospital.
The deputy general manager for general surgery at the hospital said that he would "like to apologise" but could not comment on individual cases.
Mr Wattson added that he did not know what they took out in the first operation.
According to the Daily Mail, there has been a 20 per cent increase in compensation to patients from the NHS in the past year.
