Walking after dinner could improve health

Published on 23/12/2009
With Christmas dinner on many people's minds, families have been shown the positive impact that a simple walk after eating can have on their health.

According to Ramblers, walking is a great way to stay healthy, especially after eating a big meal.

"If you feel stuffed to the gills with mince pies, then you can walk gently at first. Gradually you'll burn them off," said Ruth Somerville, of Ramblers.

Christmas lunch is typically heavier than most, but walking after eating could help burn calories and keep people from becoming overweight.

With lifestyle choices such as lack of exercise and unhealthy diets responsible for more than a third of all cancers, such an approach could have a big impact on a person's long-term health.

According to the British Nutrition Foundation, a typical Christmas dinner contains 1,470 calories.
