Two hospitalised after E.coli outbreak

Published on 04/08/2009
An E.coli outbreak has left one woman on a life support machine and a three-year-old girl seriously ill in north Wales.

The young girl has renal failure and the woman, from Wrexham, reportedly fell ill after eating a vegetarian burger from a chip shop.

Karen Morrisroe-Clutton, one of those to succumb to the infection, is said to be in a "very critical" condition by her husband.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Clutton said: "The doctors, who are absolutely out of this world, remain optimistic, but at any moment it could get worse."

The pair have an 11-week-old baby.

An additional two people have fallen ill with the disease but have not been admitted to hospital.

The chip shop which it is believed the disease was caught from has been closed since July 30th.

Currently the three-year-old is being treated at Liverpool's Alder Hey hospital.

A statement from Dr Judy Hart, a consultant in communicable disease control at the National Public Health Service for Wales, said that anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, stomach cramps and bloody diarrhoea should contact NHS Direct.
