Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan has lambasted the NHS once more by questioning why any "sane" person would choose to support it.
The Tory, who has featured prominently on US television this year, stars in new adverts praising private healthcare, citing the nationalised alternative as "inferior", the Mirror reports.
He says in the advert: "Why would any sane people cling to such a system?"
Having health insurance removes the need to rely on the NHS, which Mr Hannan has criticised for its lack of available medications and the number of infections that hospital patients pick up.
According to think-tank Policy Exchange, tonight's new year celebrations could end up costing the NHS as much as £23 million.
The figure is based on estimates of the number of admissions to accident and emergency, ambulance callouts and total inpatient services.
Policy Exchange spokesman Henry Featherstone said the level of alcohol misuse in Britain has now reached "epidemic proportions".
"The government should now commit to a review of its entire strategy for tackling the harms from alcohol misuse," he recommended.
