South American herb may help ease pain

Published on 27/11/2009
Scientists at Newcastle University have discovered an ancient herbal remedy that is as effective as a synthetic aspirin-style drug for pain relief.

Brazilian mint has traditionally been used in its native South America to treat a range of health problems from headaches and stomach pain to fever, the researchers found.

In response, Dr Mike Smith commented: "A whole range of herbals, homeopathic pills and many old-wife remedies are available for treating common problems.

"Many natural remedies when taken correctly have been proven to relieve symptoms for many common ailments... They are side-effect-free and provide an excellent remedy for the worried-well or those with short-term, self-limiting illness."

He added that sea water nasal spray is an accepted alternative treatment for congestion and removing impurities that cause such symptoms.

A significant number of Brits use herbal medicines under guidance as an accompaniment to conventional drugs and prescribed courses of treatment.
