The government has fast tracked a number of projects to fund research into swine flu.
A total of 14 projects costing more than £2 million have been forwarded by the National Institute of Health Research.
Professor Jonathan Nguyen Van-Tam, from the University of Nottingham and the Health Protection Agency, said: "Very little is currently known about the H1N1 virus which makes it very hard to predict the numbers of people likely to catch it and how best to treat them.
"For example, we do not know how long the virus is excreted by infected humans and how much virus is spread to surfaces and carried in the air."
The particular study led by Professor Nguyen Van-Tam will look into what a 'safe distance' from a swine flu patient is and how long someone remains contagious once they have contracted the virus.
In its weekly swine flu update published on August 27th, the Department of Health claimed that there had been a further reduction in the rates of "flu-like illnesses".
