Relationship 'central' to healthy life

Published on 28/08/2009
A psychologist has claimed that a good relationship is central to the health of most people.

Paula Hall, a relationship psychotherapist with 15 years of experience, said, however, that balance was important.

"A healthy relationship is central to the psychological, emotional and physical health of many people," Ms Hall claimed.

"Human beings' primary instinct is to find safety in secure groups, once that's fulfilled, we can search out other pleasures in life."

Her comments come after a study by the American Cancer Society suggested that married cancer patients diagnosed between 1973 and 2004 were the most likely to survive, while those who were separated had a lower chance of recovery.

A total of 3.79 million patients were looked at, with widows fairing among the worst.

Ms Hall said that a "secure environment" was essential for general wellbeing, but urged people to remember that it's "not always possible to have the 'happy ever after' that we all desire".
