Prostate cancer 'remains a 21st-century taboo'

Prostate cancer remains an uncomfortable topic of conversation for many men because of their fears of the disease, it has been claimed.

According to the Prostate Cancer Charity (PCC), men are more likely to hide health issues such as fears over cancer from their loved ones than money problems or job insecurity.

The charity's research indicated that one in three men has admitted to remaining silent about their health concerns, with one in six keeping conditions secret from their close friends even following a diagnosis.

Dr Sarah Cant, head of policy and campaigns at the PCC, moved to highlight the importance of prostate cancer awareness.

She said: "A lot of people don't like talking about cancer, people are afraid of the disease.

"Actually a lot of prostate cancers are very treatable and in some cases, don't need any treatment."

The PCC research also indicated that men are reluctant when it comes to advising others over health matters, while one in three admit to having left a GP's appointment without telling their doctor everything they had intended to.
