Physical activity levels important for cutting chances of stroke

Published on 26/11/2009
Moderate exercise or physical activity that raises the heart rate can help reduce the risk of stroke by more than 25 per cent, experts say.

Taking part in 30 minutes of exercise five days a week, whether it be swimming, jogging or tennis, could significantly lower an adult's likelihood of suffering from heart conditions in later life, according to the Stroke Association.

What's more, making positive lifestyle choices can also protect the body against heart disease.

Joanne Murphy, research liaison officer for The Stroke Association, added: "Even small changes to our lifestyle such as an improved diet, drinking alcohol in moderation, not smoking and being active can reduce your risk of stroke.

"High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor, so it's important that people get their blood pressure checked regularly."

Statistics from the UK charity indicate that only 40 per cent of men and 28 per cent of women meet the current exercise guidelines.
