Older Brits reveal retirement health concerns
14/04/2010Brits nearing retirement age are more concerned about health problems than financial stability, new research has found.
A survey carried out by Prudential revealed that two-thirds (66 per cent) of people planning to retire in 2010 worry about age-related ill health, more than the 54 per cent who are anxious about the rising cost of living.
The research also revealed that women are typically more concerned about both illness and money than men, with three quarters (71 per cent) of females fearing a deterioration in their health, compared to 62 per cent of men.
Karin Brown, director of pensions and annuities at Prudential, said: "In reality, people need to be equally as concerned about their money as their health in retirement.
"It's totally understandable that people would worry about their health worsening as they get older, but without having sufficient money to enjoy retirement and actually keep healthy, there is little to gain from worrying about health."
She added that preparing for a healthy retirement, both physically and financially, is very important.
Medical insurance could help older people to protect their health, while also ensuring that they have the financial support necessary in the event that they do develop an illness.
Chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease and diabetes are common health problems among over 60s in the UK.
