The Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has confirmed that three of its patients died from an infection after undergoing heart surgery last year.
With all three of the patients having been in hospital for heart valve operations, officials have issued an urgent message to dozens of people who underwent similar procedures.
According to the trust's medical director Dr Stephen Fowlie, 80 patients have already been recommended to undergo further tests, while five are already receiving treatment.
He stated that the hospital is confident that its operating theatres were not the source of the fatal infections, though confirmed that the trust has changed a number of its procedures in the wake of the infections.
"Any infections after such operations can be very serious," Dr Fowlie said.
"There are eight confirmed cases. Three patients have died and we extend our deepest condolences to their families. Five patients are receiving treatment and remain stable."
The patients have been infected by the staphylococcal bug, which usually resides harmlessly in the skin and mucous membranes of humans, though can prove to be fatal under skin-level.
