Nostalgic Brits 'risk future by living in the past'
08/02/2010Brits between the ages of 28 and 40 who grew up in the 90s and noughties are expected to be so preoccupied with nostalgia that they will neglect to plan ahead for the future.
That is according to a new report from Standard Life, which suggests that while members of this generation are realistic about the future, they are unlikely to cover themselves with health insurance or other financial protection plans.
Less than one in three 28 to 40-year-olds admitted to feeling anxious about getting older, one in three leaving their future security up to fate.
In response to the study, social commentator Damian Barr said: "We devote endless time, money and energy extending our youth, and yet by making the past so much a part of the present, we risk making our future riskier still. We have to start looking forward as well as back."
Mark Polson from Standard Life explained that this particular age group is "the most diverse and fragmented" in a culture that promotes the past.
People can protect themselves against future financial and medical uncertainty by taking out health insurance to cover expenses in cases of illness or injury.
