A new fee scale agreed by the General Practitioners Committee of the British Medical Association is set to be introduced for dispensing doctors next month.
From October 1st, the annual payment for dispensing doctors - primary care practitioners who dispense medications for patients in the UK - will be lowered by 8.7 per cent, according to NHS Employers.
In response, Stephen Burke, chief executive of Counsel and Care, said: "Injecting more flexibility in the way people can access a GP is a positive step.
"It is important that GP surgeries in rural, more isolated communities can continue to act as a central hub, providing a range of services that prove so vital to many older or more vulnerable people."
The Department of Health published a report in July highlighting the challenges faced by the current National Care Service and the need for radical reform.
Shaping the Future of Care Together Green Paper called for a consultation on the care system until November 13th this year.
