An autism charity has called for more to be done to provide care services to adults living with the condition in the UK.
Keith Lovett, director of Autism Independent UK, suggested that the NHS and primary care trusts have taken a step backwards in the past decade when it comes to treating autism.
He explained: "We are having to reinvent the wheel. Much more needs to be done, certainly for the adult sector.
"Many adults aren't able to get access to services. People that can't leave their home for whatever reason; people with autism, aren't able to get domiciliary visits from a consultant."
What is more, statistics from the National Autistic Society show that 40 per cent of all children with autism wait more than three years for a clear diagnosis.
A study published by the NHS Information Centre this month found that Autism Spectrum Disorders affect one per cent of the population and are more prevalent in men.
