MSP claims Glasgow NHS 'isn't telling the whole story' on superbug deaths

Published on 30/07/2009
As many as 28 patients are now believed to have been killed by a superbug at a Glasgow NHS hospital, it has been revealed.

While it has previously been reported that 18 patients died after contracting clostridium difficle (C diff) bug at the Gartnavel hospital last year alone, one MSP has suggested that the true extent of the problem may be being masked, with the death toll for 2009 alone much higher than currently understood.

Patricia Ferguson, Labour MSP for the Maryhill area of Glasgow, revealed to the Scottish Herald that she has seen evidence of certificates being amended so that C diff was named as only a contributing factor in a patient's death.

She told the newspaper: "I have asked the government how many death certificates were amended and they said none.

"That seems strange when I know of one. I just don't think we are getting the full story."

Though the C diff bacteria is naturally found in the body, overpopulation can cause toxins to be released, which then lead to a range of medical problems, many of which make it appear that a patient is suffering from flu.
