Women who suffer from dark circles around their eyes have been advised to educate themselves as to what may be the underlying cause.
Eye care expert Kerryne Krause-Neufeldt, chief executive officer at eyeSlices, explained that good eye health and appearance is about more than just topical treatments.
She said: "Lifestyle can affect your eyes like your diet, lack of exercise, not having enough sleep; even having a good mattress or pillow can hugely help with sleep.
"There are small things that you can do like drinking two litres of water a day and trying to get 15 minutes of exercise three times a week."
Evidence suggests that eating healthily and keeping active not only wards off signs of ageing but also protects against risk of chronic illness.
In August, consumer watchdog Which? reported that treatments containing retinoids - vitamin A derivatives - are best for repairing and rejuvenating wrinkled skin.
