The charity Target Ovarian
Cancer has claimed that the disease needs to be given higher priority if it is to be caught in time.
Annwen Jones, chief executive of the charity, said: "Unlike with
breast cancer, where we can all name the symptoms, there is huge ignorance about ovarian
cancer.
"Women are tired of waiting. Nothing much about ovarian
cancer has improved in 30 years the mortality rate is still incredibly high at 70 per cent."
She added that the mortality rate of
breast cancer had fallen "because of all the campaigning".
Statistics from
Cancer Research UK found that around 125 women are diagnosed with ovarian
cancer every week, with the disease more common in those who have been through the menopause.
In a recent study published in the British Medical Journal it was discovered that many women were reporting symptoms months before they were diagnosed.
It was discovered by Target Ovarian
Cancer that about 80 per cent of doctors wrongly believed that early stage ovarian
cancer did not have symptoms.
