Almost two-thirds of GPs have not received training in sickness certification, according to the Society of Occupational Medicine.
A new study published in the society's scientific journal found that only a third of the GPs surveyed were aware that the government had guidelines on sickness certification and even fewer (20 per cent) used them.
Professor Steve Field, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners, said: "Information comes from a variety of sources and GPs often receive different advice from hospital specialists for the time people should have off after operations.
"We are pleased that the oncologist surgeons have received guidance to help patients and doctors about sickness leave but it is quite confusing for GPs."
Recent figures from Simplyhealth indicate that more than half of Brits are so afraid of losing their job in the current economic climate that they are risking their health by working through illness.
