Salt levels in wheat or dairy-free foods are significantly higher than the amount contained in the standard versions of the products, it has been revealed.
New research conducted by Consensus Action on Salt and Health found that in some cases 'free from' products had as much as six times the amount of salt than its regular counterpart.
In response to the findings, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has highlighted the importance of checking all food products for salt content before purchase.
A spokesperson for the FSA said: "We are working closely with the food industry, encouraging them to reduce the amount of salt in many types of processed foods, and have set salt reduction targets for companies to meet by 2012.
"The targets are voluntary but we expect all food manufacturers and retailers to work toward achieving them across all their ranges."
Retailers and manufacturers have been urged to reduce the salt content in foods in order to meet voluntary health targets.
