GPs and the British public need better guidance on spotting the key symptoms to aid early diagnosis.
A survey conducted by the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust found that one in four patients had to consult their GP four times or more before they were referred to a specialist.
Dr Helen Bulbeck, director of
cancer charity brainstrust, said: "Too often, GPs will look into a more obvious cause such as migraine or dementia, rather than looking at the bigger picture.
"Earlier diagnosis may not necessarily change the outcome but it can mean that the quality of life is preserved for a longer period as treatments can be started earlier."
Research suggests that it can take three times as long to diagnose a brain tumour in the UK than in other countries.
Common symptoms associated with brain tumours include headaches, nausea,
seizures, weakness and hearing loss.
This year, an estimated 6,500 people in the UK will be diagnosed with a primary brain tumour.
