Exercise therapy beneficial for over 60s

Published on 24/02/2010
Increasing awareness of and access to exercise could help older people maintain their health and independence for longer, experts say.

According to Peter Hope from fitness company Balance Master, people over the age of 60 can benefit from increased mobility and better quality of life by participating in mild physical activity on a regular basis.

He said: "Improving balance reduces the risk factors for falls, while regular, gentle exercise, such as going for short walks or gardening, can help manage weight and benefit all-round health.

"Bearing in mind the proven link between exercise and health; exercising should be an enjoyable and productive part of every older person's life."

Recent initiatives introduced by the NHS, including GP referral schemes, chair-based exercise programmes and postural stability courses, have highlighted the growing importance of physical therapy in old age.

The Department of Health's National Service Framework for the Elderly reported that falls among pensioners cost the NHS an estimated £1 billion every year.
