Celebrities help highlight 'mental health issues'

Published on 05/03/2010
The popularisation of potentially serious mental health issues by celebrities is causing more people to see their GPs for similar problems.

That is according to a group of psychiatrists in London, who explained that high profile cases of conditions such as the bipolar disorder suffered by Stephen Fry have prompted a rise in those seeking help.

With studies suggesting as many as 11 in 100 people suffer from issues such as bipolar disorder, mental health charity Mind highlighted the importance of talking to a doctor and the role that celebrities can play in encouraging this.

Sophie Corlett, director of external relations at the charity, said: "When well known people, such as celebrities, speak out about their personal experiences it helps to raise awareness of how common mental health problems are."

She urged those who think they may suffer from the condition to make an appointment to see their GP, "who is best placed to diagnose you and offer you the support you may need".
