The average Brit sleeps for just six hours and seven minutes each night – significantly below the recommended eight hours, a new survey by QVC has found.
Almost two-thirds of people questioned in the UK said lack of sleep was to blame when they felt irritable, while 56 per cent claimed it left them unable to concentrate and 37 per cent said it made them crave sugary and fatty foods.
Professor Jim Horne, director of Loughborough University Sleep Research Centre, said: "The problem is that they are on the go all the time and they don't have time to unwind.
"People are certainly resorting to remedies that you can get over the counter that are herbal remedies and other things, which a few might find a comfort and relaxing."
Taking dietary herbal supplements such as ginseng and multivitamins can help reduce the impact of stress and promote relaxation after a busy day.
New research from the University of California, Berkeley, found that napping for one hour can dramatically boost and restore brain power.
