Bradford Royal Infirmary sued over teenager's death

Published on 21/06/2010
The parents of a teenage girl who died at Bradford Royal Infirmary are attempting to sue the NHS trust that runs the hospital.

Laura Garner, an 18-year-old trainee hairdresser from Baildon, was admitted to Bradford Royal Infirmary on September 22nd.

According to her mother, Anne Garner, she was suffering with severe abdominal pain and was told by a hospital doctor that she had either a water infection or appendicitis, the BBC reports.

However, her condition rapidly deteriorated and she died the following day.

Her cause of death was given as the bacterial infection septicaemia and acute pyelonephritis.

The family's solicitor Daniel Hilton said that, following Miss Garner's death, a serious incident report was prepared by the hospital concluding that "there were deficiencies in the basic medical processes of differential diagnosis, investigation and treatment".

"Laura's tragic death occurred after a catalogue of failures in respect of her care following her admission to Bradford Royal Infirmary," he added.

"The hospital's own report shows that they failed in the key areas of diagnosis, investigation and treatment."

Bradford Royal Infirmary is managed by Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and was one of the first to achieve Trust status, having done so in April 2004.
