Some NHS patients have been facing neglectful and sometimes demeaning treatment.
According to the Patients Association, appalling standards have been reported to them by relatives of people in hospitals across the country.
Claire Rayner, the president of the association, claimed that she was "sickened" by reports of nurses leaving patients in their own faeces and urine and not being helped to eat.
"These bad, cruel nurses may be - probably are - a tiny proportion of the nursing work force, but even if they are only one or two per cent of the whole they should be identified and struck off the Register," she added.
Katherine Murphy, director of the association, said that the stories make up around two per cent of patients "that consistently rate their care as poor".
The government chief nursing officer Chris Beasley said that the cases were "unacceptable" but that they did not represent the NHS as a whole with many people receiving good care.
