Antidepressants act on symptoms straight away

Published on 28/10/2009
Antidepressant medications start to work immediately, despite common belief to the contrary, according to UK researchers.

A study from Oxford University found that while patients may not feel any change for a few months, the drugs get to work quite rapidly on negative thought processes and mood.

Helen Robinson, information and communications officer at Journeys, said: "Antidepressants can be a useful tool in the treatment of depression but are rarely enough on their own to completely overcome it.

"Depression is a complicated illness that is usually caused by a combination of social, psychological, environmental and physical factors, often manifesting after a 'triggering' event."

She added that a holistic approach to treating the condition is often helpful at tackling the cause as well as alleviating symptoms.

Data from the Prescription Pricing Authority shows that the number of prescriptions for antidepressants in England increased by 36 per cent to 7.3 million items per quarter between 2000 and 2005.
