Analgesics linked to hearing loss

Published on 01/03/2010
Regular use of aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, can increase the risk of hearing loss in men, new findings reveal.

A study published in the American Journal of Medicine this month identified a link between loss of hearing and painkillers, particularly in men below the age of 60.

The research revealed that regular users of aspirin in that age category were 33 per cent more likely to develop hearing loss than non-regular users.

Lead author of the report Dr Sharon Curhan said: "Regular use of analgesics, specifically aspirin, NSAIDs and acetaminophen, might increase the risk of adult hearing loss, particularly in younger individuals.

"Given the high prevalence of regular analgesic use and health and social implications of hearing impairment, this represents an important public health issue."

Other known side-effects of taking aspirin include gastrointestinal problems, bleeding of the stomach and tinnitus in higher doses.
