Benenden Healthcare is a mutual ‘not for profit’ Friendly Society. The company is one of the UK’s longest serving mutual healthcare societies. The Society has a membership of over 900,000 and is currently open to all public sector workers and their families, members of charities, credit unions and co-operatives, and employees of compatible organisations.

Benenden Hospital has recently been able to provide services for patients who are not members of the Benenden Healthcare Society. Local National Health Services are increasing their use of the Hospital’s facilities as are patients who wish to use private medical insurance or who wish to pay directly for their own hospital care.

Healthcare Plans

Benenden Healthcare asks for one flat rate of £1.50 per person per week, just £78 a year. You can choose to pay monthly, quarterly or annually, whichever suits you.

Membership costs do not rise with age, or because you use the service. This is because Benenden is not an insurer and has no shareholder dividends to pay. Cover includes local consultations and tests, treatment and surgery, physiotherapy, counselling, psychology and financial assistance for living with cancer or TB.

Corporate Healthcare

Benenden Healthcare is not a medical insurer. As an alternative to traditional healthcare cover it provides a range of discretionary advisory, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation services for £1.50 per employee, per week.

Health Cashplan

Available exclusively to Benenden Healthcare Society members aged 17-65 years, the Benenden Health Cash Plan is a way to help you budget for everyday healthcare bills. The plan pays out when you pay bills after visiting the dentist, optician, or selected therapists.

Healthcare Company History

Benenden Hospital was founded in 1907 and became the centre for hospital treatment for members of Trade Unions and Friendly Societies and subsequently large numbers of public.

Benenden Healthcare was established as The Post Office Sanatorium Society over 100 years ago in 1923 by Charles Garland as a society to assist post office workers suffering from tuberculosis.

In 1997 the Society was renamed as The Benenden Healthcare Society.
